Buttery Bird Cocktail: Toffee Apple in a Glass
Sometimes it’s easy to decide what cocktail I want to mix up because I’m in the mood for something specific. Other times I want to try my latest liqueur purchase. Occasionally I don’t have a clue what I fancy, but I know I want something. Such was the case with this cocktail. All I knew was that I had some apple juice that needed using up and it was one of those rare occasions that I didn’t want gin.
Along side the numerous cocktail books on my shelf, I also have an app on my phone that allows me to search by ingredient and glass type. It has given me a lot of very good drinks, but there are also some that read like someone has just emptied the drinks cupboard into a bowl, sloshed in their glass and exclaimed rather loudly “Szatsh rarthur niish. Cheeeeersh!” then toppled over sideways. Whatever works I guess.
On this occasion I put “apple juice” and set the glass type to “long drink” and scrolled through the 139 results that I got until I stumbled across the Buttery Bird. Not only did it perfectly use up the apple juice, but it also had a fun-size measure of butterscotch liqueur in that I had bought on offer and not found much to use it in, probably because I’m not usually one for sweet cocktails. The final ingredient was blended scotch (I chose Whyte & Mackay)- and that sealed the deal for me.
As is often the case, I adjusted the proportions slightly according to my taste; I upped the whisky measure a little to balance the sweetness of the butterscotch and apple juice. What came out of the shaker was a cheeky little toffee apple number with the perfect blend of sweet and dryness.
