Super Fly Super Corona: Super construction
July was the “Month of Sin” for Cigar Club LDN. They had teamed up with Sin Cigars for the monthly cigar and assorted goodies. This time it was a New World cigar from Oscar Valladares called the Super Fly Super Corona and what an eye-catching cigar it was! Coming in at slightly larger than the standard corona cigar, this cigar made its presence known in just about every way it could. From the glossy purple exterior of the box and its purple velvet lining, to the 70s vibe of the band, this cigar appealed to the eyes and enticed you to cut and light it.
The maduro wrapper of the Super Fly itself looked as glamourous and sleek as the branding suggested it would be. It oozed aromas of rich cocoa and the easy and smooth cold draw left a lovely light, sweet oil on my lips. Having heard that this cigar was going to be full of chocolaty, earthy and sweet spice flavours, I had mixed myself an Irresistible Manhattan cocktail to play off and enhance these notes as-and-when they showed up.
Upon lighting the Super Fly I was treated to an opening salvo of light floral note and intense cocoa. These flavours were very dominant for about the first half inch of the cigar. After this point, they took a back seat and the taste opened up. One thing I did note about the flavour was that it didn’t linger in the mouth. Some cigars have a long flavour that still tickled the taste buds long after the smoke has left your mouth.
It was the opposite with the flavour on this cigar. Once I had exhaled the thick smoke, I was left with a completely clean taste in my mouth. Whilst some people might think this isn’t a good thing, it allowed me to enjoy the taste over and over without it getting muddied. As I smoked my way through the first third of the Super Fly Super Corona, the cocoa became rather dry and crisp, reminding me of bourbon chocolate biscuits. This crisp flavour was supported by hints of cedar and white pepper.
As I approached the middle of the cigar, the cocoa notes were joined by a rich dark fruit flavour. Where the taste had been a little on the secco side, a the smoke started to take on moistness whilst maintaining its light and airy feeling. This combination of flavour and texture, along with the cocktail, brought to mind really rich Black Forest Gateaux. Whilst I was enjoying this sumptuous taste, I realised the the moist dark fruits were being joined by an undertone of dried mixed peel.
Entering the final third of the Super Fly Super Corona the flavour profile took on a different characteristic. Whilst the cocoa was still present, it became a very much a subtle undertone. Instead, it was replaced with a good amount of peppery spice. There was a deep earthy tone and richness to the flavour. I couldn’t help but think of a slow cooked chilli con carne with a good amount of spice to it.
From start to nub I was able to retrohale freely when I wanted to and the construction was impeccable. By the time I got to the end, I had a very neat collection of ash balls sitting in my ashtray. I thoroughly enjoyed the time that I spent with Oscar Valladares’ Super Fly Super Corona cigar. Even if it doesn’t make my top cigars of the year, it is a cigar that I wouldn’t mind spending time with again.

Super Fly Super Corona Review Summary
My Verdict
This was a flavourful cigar with perfect construction. The styling is very 70s and the intense Black Forest Gateaux notes that I picked up in the middle third seemed very fitting. Don’t expect a long lingering taste, but this cigar will give you some deliciously intense flavours.
