Romeo y Julieta Petit Churchill: Short, smooth and sweet

Over the years I’ve tried a fair number of different vitolas from Romeo y Julieta. Aside from my most recent Number 1, most have been beautiful cigars with perfect burn and a lovely flavour. The Petit Churchill was no different. Gifted to me by a sister of the leaf at my first in-person herf, it seemed appropriate to smoke it with another sister of the leaf live on Instagram. This wasn’t the first time that I had chatted to Madeleine. The first time we had shared the Patina Habano Copper Corona Gorda Cigar but alas, that live stream got lost so obviously we had to do it again!

The Romeo y Julieta Petit Churchill was an elegant looking cigar with a good firm feel from head to foot. I recognised the light floral notes that I picked up as I took it out of my humidor. There were also delicious aromas of butter toffee in a supporting role. This got my mouth watering and I was looking forward as much to the cigar as I was to the chat.

My first taste of the cigar was the cold draw, which was deliciously light with that floral note that you get from a bowl of potpourri at the opposite side of the room. Upon lighting the foot the gentle toffee aromas came to the fore with a hint of earthy bay leaf. Before too long, a subtle note of sultanas joined the mix – this was going to be a cigar that I would enjoy spending time with.

While conversation went from topic to topic the creamy but feather-light smoke drifted away into the summer evening. The toffee flavour started to give way to a smooth nuttiness that made me think of cashew nut butter so I picked up my bottle of 3 year old Havana Club Rum and poured myself a generous glass.

Smoking through the middle the flavour remained fairly consistent but started to build from a mild cigar towards a more medium bodied and rich smoke. Towards the final third I started to get hints of leather and freshly baked bara brith (a fruity bread from Wales). The flavour was still very smooth and clean, and the smoke was light, holding a comfortable shape in my mouth without leaving a film on my teeth and tongue. Right at the nub, the toffee flavour made a triumphant return, this time with added sweetness.

The Romeo y Julieta Petit Churchill is exactly the same vitola as the Quai D’Orsay No. 50 and given a choice between the two cigars, I would pick the latter. That is not to say that I wouldn’t smoke the former again, of the two I just preferred the Quai D’Orsay.
