Leap Year Cocktail: Something to Help You Survive 2020
2020 has been one hell of a year for a myriad of reasons, and I for one would be happy to leap forward to when we are finally beyond this awful pandemic. Alas, I cannot do that so I will just have to make do with finding an appropriate cocktail instead. It has also been a leap year, and what do you know, there is a Leap Year cocktail!
Given that the Leap Year cocktail is a gin-based drink and a variation on a martini, it needed to be done. I will start by saying that it is heavy on the gin and light on everything else, just the way a good martini should be. Suffice to say this is not a drink if you’re not a fan of gin.
My gin of choice for this cocktail was Plymouth Gin. This is my go-to gin for a complex martini-style drink such as the Leap Year cocktail. I find Plymouth very clean and well-rounded with a good amount of juniper which is balanced by undertones of citrus and gentle hint of coriander.
In this cocktail, the lemon juice, orange liqueur (Grand Marnier was my choice) and red vermouth (what else but Dubonnet) gently bolster the botanicals in the Plymouth gin to give the Leap Year cocktail a beautifully rounded and well balanced flavour.
