Mexican Espresso Martini: A Sumptuous Tequila Twist on My Favourite Cocktail Recipe
There is a lot to be written about pairing drinks and cigars. I know some people who will only drink water to ensure that they don’t sully the flavour of the cigar.
There are others who have their trusty spirit to hand, be it whisky, brandy, rum, etc. Often a longer drink is preferred, say a pint of your chosen beverage. Equally a coffee will go with most cigars.
I have done all of these on occasion depending on my mood, the cigar, my surroundings and what is to hand. There is many a time that I have changed drink halfway through a smoke as the flavour profile has changed significantly and would pair well with something different.
Quite often my drink of choice for the start of a cigar is an Espresso Martini. The iced coffee and gentle undercurrent of vodka in this cocktail recipe just seem to work well with most cigars.

Lately I was introduced to the idea of replacing the vodka with tequila by fellow SOTL Cynthia Gonzales, and I just had to give it a go. What can I say other than that I am sold on it. There is a wonderful smokiness that the tequila brings to the drink that only serves to enhance the flavours in the cigar.
That being said, I’m not going to completely abandon my classic Espresso Martini cocktail recipe, but I think I may have to explore other base spirits to use instead of vodka. Rest assured that I will share the results of these experiments with you on here complete with recipes.
