Black Sun Cocktail: Level up your Rum and Coke
Cocktail making doesn’t get much easier than this variation on the Cuba Libre. We all know that rum and coke is a winning combination, but what about taking it up a level with the Black Sun Cocktail?
The main difference between a basic rum and coke and the Cuba Libre is the addition of a squeezed wedge of lime. This little addition makes all the difference and gives the drink more of an air of sophistication. There is something about rum and a citrus juice that works really well. You just need to think of the classic Mojito, Daquiri, Rum Sour and Mai Tai to realise that rum and fruit is a match made in cocktail heaven.
So just how is the Black Sun Cocktail different to the Cuba Libre? You simply add a measure of orange liqueur to your rum and coke and garnish with a wedge of orange if you so desire. The addition of triple sec gives a gentle citric flavour to the cocktail and the orange wedge isn’t quite as tart as the lime.
For an added bit of depth, you could change the traditional white rum for an aged, dark or spiced rum. That is where the fun comes in to cocktail making. I made a couple of versions of this cocktail using a white in one and a dark rum in the other. My preference was the dark rum as it tasted more rounded. That isn’t to say that the white rum version was bad, I just enjoyed the flavour of the dark rum more. Plus it seemed to be a more fitting base spirit given the cocktails name. Perhaps I’ll have to use a spiced rum next time I mix this one up.
