Kafie 1901 San Andres Robusto Largo Cigar
I do like a good maduro wrapper, and never say no to a box pressed cigar either – so the Kafie 1901 San Andres Robusto Largo Cigar ticks both of those boxes straight out of the gate. There is something about the way a box pressed cigar sits between the lips that makes it a very comfortable smoke. This might come as a bit of a surprise as we, or at least I, always think of rounded lips when taking a draw on a cigar.
The smooth and appetising maduro wrapper exuded aromas of coffee and leather as I slipped this box pressed cigar out of its protective cellophane. The v-cut was a little deeper than I would have liked and along with flavours of sweet leather, the very easy cold draw left a few flakes of tobacco in my mouth.
My first draws were filled with honey toast and woodiness and the maduro wrapper left a delectable sweetness on my lips. I know that I usually pair a stiff drink with a cigar. Often an Espresso Martini, whisky or rum, but I felt that this cigar could be easily overpowered by each of those so I poured myself a generous glass of Dr Pepper. The fruity flavour from the drink worked perfectly with the cigar.
Towards the middle of the Kafie 1901 San Andres Robusto Largo Cigar, I started to get hints of white pepper accompanying the sweet wood notes that had been present from the start. The smoke was fun to roll around my mouth, its medium weight clouds separating into gossamer ribbons as I blew it towards the ceiling. The burn was absolutely faultless with a nice sized yellow-grey ash holding its shape both on and off the cigar.
As I entered the final third, I noticed that the flavours had subtly phased from woody to fruity. Trying to pinpoint the exact fruit that I was tasting, the piquancy and almost citrusy flavour made me settle on gooseberries. It was at this point that the flavours of the San Andres Robusto Largo Cigar started to morph more rapidly and a few puffs later the leatheryness from the opening aromas was back, but this time with an undercurrent of artichoke.
