Hiram and Solomon Traveling Man Lancero Cigar: Smooth and delicious
This was the cigar that started my love affair with lancero cigars. Prior to smoking this vitola from the Hiram and Solomon Traveling Man range, I had been very much a Robusto and Churchill lover.
The beauty of this cigar starts on the outside. The purple band emblazoned with the Masons compass and set square symbol stands off the Colorado coloured wrapper, setting the scene for an immaculately crafted cigar. Aromas of sweet, fermenting grass heavy with morning dew filled my nose as I slipped it out of the cellophane wrapper that had protected the lancero cigar on its journey to me.
My first draws gave forth a creamy textured smoke with chocolate nuances and left a delectable sweetness on my lips. After a couple more draws, I picked out my bottle of Glenlivet Captain’s Reserve and poured myself a nice measure into a snifter glass. This was the perfect pairing for the cigar, its honeyed fig notes perfectly offsetting the gentle notes of warming chilli. As I smoked my way further into the Traveling Man lancero cigar, a rich fruitiness of plume and ginger joined in to produce a moreish and well rounded flavour
One thing that I have discovered about the lancero cigar as opposed to other vitolas is the narrow ring gauge and longer length give them a complexity and depth of flavour. This was most evident upon entering the middle third of the cigar. The cream that I had noted from my first draws was there, as was the chocolate. Alongside these sweeter flavours, and in perfect balance, was a deep, rich meatiness that I would associate with a Brazilian grill with all the possible different meats cooking simultaneously.
As I smoked my way through this, for want of a better turn of phrase, “juicy section” of the cigar, my attention turned to the smoke. Allowing the medium weight smoke to roll around my mouth, I picked up the sumptuous taste of smoked truffles. On the exhale the smoke revealed itself as thick at first but very quickly became vaporous.
The final third was signalled by a return to the fruitiness of the opening few draws. This time though, there was a hint of cinnamon left on my lips and a subtle coating of chocolate over my tongue. By the time I reach the final inch with many cigars, I find myself only taking short draws so as to not burn my lips or palate with either heat or peppery spice. Having been retrohaling every few draws, the smoothness of the Hiram and Solomon Traveling Man Lancero cigar allowed me to take long, deep draws right to the nub, letting me savour every last drop of this delightful stick.
