Nova Platinum Toro: Beautiful in blue

With cigars, as with everything in life, there are some where one is the perfect quantity. Then there are cigars when even one is too many, or cigars that leave you wanting more because one wasn’t quite enough. For me the Nova Platinum Toro falls into the final category.

Nova Cigars are always beautiful to look at. A lot of care and attention goes into the craftsmanship and I have never been disappointed by the construction. The same is true of this Nova Platinum Toro cigar. The subtle veining on the San Andres wrapper delicately caressed the length of the cigar and left a creamy moisturiser feel on my fingers as I held and cut it.

The Nova Platinum Toro was redolent with cassia bark, prunes and bay leaf as I cut the head with my v-cutter. The cold draw reinforced these notes with added caraway seed. Once lit, the first draws were rich like condensed milk, with earthy mushroom supporting and gentle toffee floating over the top.

Knowing that the cigar was going to be full of fruity flavours, the first drink I chose to enjoy with it was a Cherry Gin Espresso Martini. This worked really well with the beautiful creamy texture of the smoke and enhanced the subtle chocolate nuances in the flavour.

As expected from previous Nova Cigars I have smoked, the construction was virtually flawless and I had a very precise set of ashballs by the time I reached the end of the cigar, even though I was laughing away at a virtual herf and waving the poor cigar around all over the place. At no point did it drop ash unexpectedly or leave a crumbly mess for me to sweep up.

By the time I had smoked my way through to the middle of the cigar, which had become even creamier by this time, I was in need of another drink. It needed to be something that would once again compliment the sweet dried fruit flavours of the Nova Platinum Toro. I plumped for a Glenfairn single malt whisky and ended up emptying the bottle. Once again, this was the perfect choice to play off the rich dried fruit and nougat tastes in the cigar.

Alas, the end of the cigar came all too quickly and I was left wanting more. I don’t mean this as a negative. Very often when I smoke, I only tend to have one cigar. By the time I have finished smoking my first, even if I had others picked out and plenty of time for them, I rarely smoke any more. With the Nova Platinum Toro, I could quite happily have smoked another couple of them.
