Alec Bradley Project 40 Robusto: Smooth, meditative and delicious
The even firmness of the Alec Bradley Project 40 Robusto and smooth Colorado Claro wrapper set the scene for an amazing experience when I chose to smoke this cigar. Beautiful aromas of cedar and caraway tickled my nose as I slipped the cigar out of its cellophane wrapper. Once cut, the cold draw tasted of marshmallow and cereal, but without the inherent sweetness of either.
Lighting the cigar was effortless and the first draws filled my mouth with sumptuous smoke. The flavours were rich and earthy with sweet tobacco which made my mind immediately wander back to being a little girl sat in front of an open log fire with my grandfather sat in his chair puffing on his pipe.
Alas, this opening salvo told me that the cigar flavours were not going to marry comfortably with the cocktail that I had made myself. Needless to say, the cocktail didn’t hang around very long before I grabbed a bottle of Kraken rum to enjoy with the rest of the smoke.
As I savoured my way through the first third, the smooth creaminess of the flavour told me that I was in for a treat. The sweetness started to crescendo towards the second third, culminating in notes of soft dark brown sugar with an undercurrent of a wood burner for support.
It was when I entered the middle third that the Alec Bradley Project 40 Robusto really started to flex its flavour muscles. I was greeted by a delicious headiness that encouraged me to slow right down and watch the sinuous curls of luxurious smoke float around me and off into infinity. Each draw filled my mouth with impressive amounts of creamy, bay leaf scented smoke.
It is often said that smoking a cigar is a form of meditation. With this cigar, perhaps more than others I have smoked, I was encouraged to take pause to enjoy the flavours. I found myself thinking about how well the Alec Bradley Project 40 Robusto would work with my scrambled eggs and black pudding on marmite toast which I was planning to have for breakfast the following morning!
Rich cedar flavours were dominant as I smoked past the halfway mark and through to the nub. These were joined in the final third by sweet dates and lamb mince that worked really well with the generous glass of Kraken rum that I had poured myself.
At no point was the Alec Bradley Project 40 Robusto harsh in flavour. It was creamy and smooth from start to finish and a thoroughly enjoyable cigar to smoke. The construction was absolutely flawless, with a long white ash growing steadily as I smoked my way through the cigar.
