Quai D’Orsay No. 50: A gentle and creamy puro
I always look forward to trying cigars that others have recommended. Often they are not ones that would have ordinarily been on my radar, as was the case with the Quai D’Orsay No. 50. Being a Cuban cigar I was aware of the brand but as it was described as a light smoke made with a Colorado Claro shade wrapper I had never really given it a second thought.
The wrapper was the colour of a delicious latte coffee and looked beautifully smooth. Aromas of caraway seeds filled my nostrils as I felt the firm construction before cutting and lighting it.
Once lit, I was surprised how sweet and creamy the cigar tasted. My first draws were full of warm leather and bay leaf. The smoke felt weightless in my mouth, but was richly flavoured with sweet summer meadow grass.
Given how beautifully constructed the Quai D’Orsay No. 50 felt as I fondled it before lighting, I shouldn’t have been surprised by the one inch ash that built up before I knocked it whilst topping up my drink.
As I reached the middle third, the smoothness continued as did the unctuous leathery notes. These were joined by subtle notes of liquorice, which gently morphed into a gentle aniseed before becoming a light, warming ginger flavour in the final third.
This has to be one of the creamiest cigars that I have smoked. The burn was absolutely perfect right the way through, and had I not knocked the ash off at the start, I would probably have ended up with an impressive tower of ash the full length of the cigar as I was able to “nub it” till the very end.
