MUWAT Gordo by Drew Estate Review: Bigger can be Better
I used to be very much a toro or Churchill girl. I thought that large ring gauges were rather obscene and they didn’t really appeal to me. Then I was persuaded to try the Asylum Schizo Hercule and became a bit of a convert. It was for that same reason that I also tried the MUWAT Gordo 560 by Drew Estate. Now, when pressed, I would be hard pushed to say what my favourite vitola is.
This line of cigars get their name from Jonathan Drew nicknaming the 6 x 60 vitola his “Uzi” due to its size. When picking up a bundle of 50, he commented “My uzi weighs a ton”, and the name stuck. Ranging in sizes from 4 x 44 right up to 7 x 70, this cigar isn’t one to be taken lightly, and certainly a brand that I was eager to sample for myself as I do enjoy a good Nicaraguan smoke.
Straight out of the humidor I was met by a dark chocolate wrapper with beautiful aromas to match. It felt firm and deliciously oily in my hand, and the “in your face” band told me what sort of cigar to expect. One thing that I did notice about this particular MUWAT Gordo 560 cigar was the cap. Alas, I saw that there was a bit of a split in the wrapper just below the cap, so rather than v-cut, as I have taken to doing with the majority of my cigars, I chose to punch and keep as much integrity in the wrapper and cap as I could.
The MUWAT Gordo 560 is quoted as being a medium to full flavoured cigar, but my first draws were mild and creamy. There was a beautifully sweet taste of dried fruits with fresh almonds adding a creamy smoothness. The smoke was equally sweet and creamy and very light in texture like a perfectly cooked soufflé. As I blew my smoke rings, they lingered for a few moments before melting into the air.
My drink of choice to go with the MUWAT Gordo 560 was a generous glass of 5-year-old Metaxa Greek brandy. This played beautifully with the fruitiness and truly enhanced my experience as a good pairing should. Aged brandy isn’t my usual choice of tipple to pair with a cigar, but it worked really well this time and is definitely going to be added to my list of drinks to consider when lighting up a cigar with a similar blend to this.
As I reached the middle of the cigar, the creaminess became a lot richer and, if it were at all possible for this cigar to get any smoother and more velvety in flavour, it did. The fruity raisin flavours were joined by cocoa as I admired the perfect burn that I had and the beautiful stack of ash that was growing with every draw. Even when it dropped at two inches long, it stayed in tact and left little mess for me to worry about cleaning up.
I would love to finish this review by saying that I smoked the MUWAT Gordo 560 right down to the nub and enjoyed every moment of it, but unfortunately the split in the wrapper that I noted at the beginning reared its ugly head towards the end. Having removed the band, the split became a little longer, almost as if the band had been holding the cigar together and by the time I was starting to enter the final 2 inches, the wrapper split completely and was left sitting wide open in my ashtray. I will have to revisit this cigar so that I can hopefully enjoy the final third without ending up with a mouthful of binder.

I really enjoyed this cigar and wanted to smoke it right down to the nub, but unfortunately the split in the wrapper stopped me with nearly 2 inches to go.
