HVC Edición Especial 2018 Corona Review: A new cigar and drink together
In keeping with their ethos of staying true to the Cuban roots of cigar making, the HVC Edición Especial 2018 corona is a hand rolled Nicaraguan puro cigar. The Corojo 99 wrapper looked like a beautiful coating of chocolate around the cigar and the band was nicely understated in keeping with many Cuban brands.
Once I had finished admiring the look of the HVC Edición Especial 2018, I slipped it out of its cellophane wrapper and was met by the same delectable sweet smell of tobacco as you would find walking into a humidor. There was a gentle hint of rich cocoa as well which carried on through to the cold draw.
The HVC Edición Especial 2018 corona was strong out of the gate, full of the rich and meaty flavours of a well roasted joint of beef with a good pepper crust. This should have been a sign that a good bottle of full bodied Cabernet would have been the better match rather than the Mount Gay rum I reached for.
As I reached the middle of the cigar a deep dark liquorice taste started to develop. I do love a good bit of liquorice, but all too often, the liquorice is over sweetened and looses its richness. This particular liquorice flavour made me recall Pontefract cakes and their particularly deep flavour. As I was enjoying this particular aspect of the cigar I noticed that the HVC Edición Especial 2018 corona had started to return to it’s peppercorn steak roots with hints of sable. At this point the cigar was starting to get a little too peppery, but after a quick blow through and purge I was ready to carry on enjoying the rest of the stick.
Towards the final third of the cigar I discovered a subtle floral flavour of jasmine starting to creep in at the top of the flavours. This remained for the rest of the cigar along side the ever present juicy chargrilled peppercorn steak. Right at the nub of the cigar a rich, sweet note of dates slid in, but this was all too brief as within a couple of draws, the cigar was finished and it was time to let the soldier rest.

My Verdict
I think that my choice of drink pairing didn’t do this cigar any favours. I will have to revisit this cigar again and make sure that I update my review when I do.
