Diesel Unlimited Origin D4 Review: A Rather Disappointing Cigar

It’s not often that I have had a bad cigar, but I think this was one of those unfortunate times. Having had a very productive time last week, I thought I’d kick back with a robusto to congratulate myself and have a video chat with a friend. I chose the Diesel Unlimited Origin D4, which had been sitting in my humidor for a couple of months.

At first glance the cigar was well made and firm to the touch. The Ecuadorian wrapper was the colour of dark chocolate and gave off aromas of sweet chocolate and cashew nuts. The cold draw was easy with the flavours of walnut and oak left on my lips.

Upon taking the band off the foot of the cigar to light it, I discovered that it was covering a hole in wrapper. It wasn’t a large one, but none-the-less it made me feel a little uneasy, which isn’t good when going into smoking a cigar. Not one to be put off by slight flaws and imperfections, I lit up and took my first draws.

The first flavour to hit me was one of harsh ammonia – not exactly a good start to my cigar time that I had been looking forward to most of the week, but I allowed it to breath and it settled down to reveal notes of very strong black coffee and cashew nuts.

The smoke was very light in both colour and texture but as I progressed to the middle of the cigar it started to get thicker, although the trails weren’t as well defined as some cigars I’ve smoked.

Just after the mid point, the flavours had developed a sweet creaminess, so I took a chance on a retrohale. This turned out to be a bad idea. The abrasive flavours that I’d tasted at the start returned full blast and well and truly cleared my sinuses. After recovering from that hammer blow, I was able to return to the actual flavours of the cigar.

Alas, the final third of the Diesel Unlimited Origin D4 wasn’t exactly what I would call pleasurable. There was a marked return to the harshness of the first draws, but added to this was a distinct synthetic flavour that stopped me from even contemplating nubbing it.
